How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

61% of women clean their brushes less than once a month or not at all.

If you wear makeup, then you most likely own makeup brushes. The question is, are you cleaning your brushes?

I don’t know about you, but since I’ve been in quarantine I have barely worn any makeup, and I’m sure my face is thanking me for the much-needed break. However, even though my makeup isn’t being used often, I haven’t neglected the need to clean my brushes. As I have mentioned in the past, I’ve had several stye removal surgeries, therefore I have to be vigilant about the products I use. The cleanliness of my brushes is an important part of keeping my eyes free from bacteria and oil buildup. Makeup brushes can carry bacteria, dead skin, and sometimes even fungus causing infection and clogged pores.

Cleaning your makeup brushes once a week keeps acne-causing bacteria at bay, improves makeup application and helps brushes last longer.

According to a study conducted by Harris Poll, 17% of women don’t know how to properly clean their brushes, and 22% say it takes too long to clean and dry. Today, I am going to share how I clean my makeup brushes. First of all, cleaning your brushes with a brush spray after every use isn’t enough to get rid of bacteria. In fact, you should wash your brushes frequently to prevent build-up and infection. Brushes can be expensive, so I like to take care of them. Here is how I keep my brushes looking new and clean:

  • STEP ONE: I start by adding two drops of natural dish soap, I typically use Mrs. Myers Dish Soap, into a cup with luckwarm water. I seperate my eye brushes from my face brushes and place them facing down in two seperate cups. I let them sit for about 10 mins.
  • STEP TWO: Then I grab my Thrive Cosmetics Hero Brush pad and begin to wash the brushes one by one with the bristle facing down. There are a ton of great cleaning pads, I personally like this one because I can insert my hand into the back and get a good grip of it while washing my brushes.
  • STEP THREE: Once all brushes are washed, I rinse them to remove any excess dirt and grime . If you don’t wash your brushes regularly, you might have to wash it a few times to get all the gunk out.
  • STEP FOUR: Finally, I place a towel on a flat surface, lay the brushes down on the towel, fold the towel over the brush and press gently to soakup any excess water. Then I place the brush with the bristle at the edge of the towel to allow airflow for a complete dry. I let my brushes dry for at least 8 hours before use. I recommend washing them at night so they have enough time to dry and are ready for you to use in your morning makeup routine.

These four easy steps can help keep your face clean and help your brushes last longer. I mean who doesn’t enjoy saving money?
