The Future is Female

The Future is Female

Women make up 19.3% of House of Representatives and 23% of the US Senate

November 6th, 2018 is going to become a historic moment for women the United States. Win or lose, the amount of women running for office in this mid-term election is incredible; here’s Center for American Women and Politics list of candidates.  Women are running for office and they are using their voices to represent those who aren’t being heard. Currently, women make up 19.3% of House of Representatives and 23% of the US Senate. Let’s witness these numbers increase!

As an immigrant, now American citizen who voted for the first time in 2008; I know what a privilege I have to be able to vote while so many of my friends and family are not granted the same right.  You can use your voice to help make a difference not only in your life but in the lives of others. Please understand the power you have and be courageous enough to use it- VOTE! This is a new era in American Politics. Could this be a new wave of feminism in America? Make sure when you share this historic moment with your grandchildren, you’re not regretting your decision to not vote. Put on your Phenomenal Woman t-shirts and get to the polls tomorrow. If you’ve already voted, volunteer to take others to the polls.

Here are a few women who are making history and representing marginalized communities in America.  ENJOY!

Ayanna Pressley

How can I not begin with Boston’s very own, Ayanna Pressley, who will become the first African American woman to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representative. This isn’t her first historic win; in 2009 she was the first African American woman elected to the Boston City Council in its 100-year history. I have a feeling she isn’t going to stop making history, and representing her constituency. Pressley serves with so much grace, humility and poise; not to mention dope fashion. From her braids/twists to her bold statement necklaces, she will be making a fashionable entrance when she arrives to DC. #ChangeCantWait

Congratulations, Congresswoman Pressley!

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Bronx bartender turned politician, Ocasio-Cortez wasn’t having it when her congressman ignored the needs of his constituency. Instead of complaining, she began campaigning against him, which led to a victory in the NY primary election.  Ocasio-Cortez is fearless and eager to represent the people of NYC. She may be young, but she’s one powerful voice in this midterm election. It takes courage to speak up for others!

Kyrsten Lea Sinema

Politics isn’t new to Sinema; she’s been serving on the U.S. House of Representative for Arizona since 2013 and is currently running for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat. If elected, Sinema would become the second LGBT person to serve on the U.S. Senate. While serving as State Representative she has supported both the DREAMS Act and for same-sex marriage.

Ilhan Omar

Omar became the first Somali-American legislator elected in the United States and is currently running for the U.S. House of Representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district. She is a proud Muslim American and Director of Policy and Initiatives of the Women Organizing Women Network. Bold and Fashionable!
