The Classic Trench Coat

CT

Ok ladies, summer is basically over (3 days). Yes I said it, no more hot tanning beach days, but we have so much to look forward to this fall. I’ve already seen  pumpkin spice lattes on the menu and knitted sweaters in stores. Honestly if you ask me, they are getting ahead of themselves. I mean the weather in Boston is still in the 70’s (most days). I’m in a transition period where I’m not ready to put away my summer dresses but definitely need a layering piece to keep me warm.

This week I’m sharing my favorite layer piece, the classic trench coat. Last spring, I was searching for a trench coat that wasn’t too expensive but a good quality and fit. I waited for this beauty to go on sale because come on- i don’t pay full price, and it was exactly what I was looking for. Here is why:

Timeless

The trench coat was invented in 1901 by Thomas Burberry and let’s face it’s been over 100 years later and this coat has yet to go out of style.  It’s classic and should be a staple piece in every adult woman’s closet. If you don’t believe me, check your grandmother’s closet you might find a vintage high quality trench just waiting for you to wear it.

Fit

We all have different body types (what a wonderful thing) but not every fit works for everyone. For example, I have full breasts and I know that MOST double-breasted blazers and coats do not work for me. If you shop for trench coats then you know that most trench coats are double breasted, so you can imagine how surprised I was to find a single-breasted trench that worked for my body. The buttons are positioned perfectly, allowing me to keep the top portion open and the belt sits right at my waistline, enhancing my figure.

Versatile

My favorite thing about the classic trench is that I can wear it with almost anything. This is the perfect coat to wear to work with a blouse and slacks, to romantic dinners with your little black dress (LBD), or on the weekends with a pair of jeans and t-shirt.

If you don’t have a trench coat, you should really consider adding one to your closet. Make sure the fit is right for your body, do not settle for the first one you find because it looks good on your friend or a model. Dress for your body and for your comfort. Also, you should always invest in staple pieces, a good quality trench is a timeless piece you can pass down to your daughter.
